GIG REVIEW // Mall Grab and CC:DISCO! at The Tuesday Club

A week after Sheffield played host to Jackmaster, one of most renowned house and tech acts about, The Tuesday Club delivered again but this time with one of the newer faces on the scene. Jordan Alexander, aka Mall Grab, has been causing a stir for a few years now, but recent sets and releases have seen him rise to the top of his genre. The Australian producer, who now resides in London, toys with a mix of funky, melodic tech and lo-fi house and after the release of his 2015 EP ‘Feel You,’ he’s quickly become a man in demand. Teaming up with influential London radio station & long-time collaborators, Rinse FM, Mall Grab came through to play an extended three hour set to a sell out crowd.

Joining Mall Grab on the line up was fellow Aussie native CC:DISCO!, who kicked of proceedings with an energetic mix of disco and house. After developing a following in her home country, CC, real name Courtney Clarke, has made quick work of developing a name for herself in Europe and beyond for her melody driven sets. Making her debut in Sheffield off the back of a memorable Boiler Room last year, CC:DISCO! had things raucous from the word go – incorporating cuts from classic funk and soul into her mix.

By the time the headliner took to the decks, the amount of sweat in the place was already something else. Mall Grab’s ability to identify the vibe and play the cuts to fit is something that sets him apart from other lesser-known house DJs. Harnessing his diverse stockpile of tracks; he controlled the mood for three hours without falter. The set was dominated by harder house sounds with constant rise and fall ensuring the Sheffield crowd literally never stopped dancing. With unreleased Denis Sulta joints, belters from Special Request and Runaway, and the odd vocal sample or tech banger thrown in for good measure, Mall Grab made a three hour set look easy. The crowd never left the palm of his hand and as the set came to and end, it seemed as though they could have gone for a good while longer.

Mall Grab’s rapid rise to success hasn’t gone unnoticed and I urge you to look out for him this upcoming festival season – you won’t be disappointed. With a rammed schedule for the upcoming months, he’s destined to become one of the biggest names on the scene. Yet again, The Tuesday Club came through with another huge booking last night, and with Rodigan arriving in the Steel City on Friday and Floating Points confirmed for April, the ridiculous calibre of the acts doesn’t look to be letting up any time soon.
